Open Plan Living, London

A Victorian semi-detached house with a large entrance hall leading to a spacious kitchen, dining area and family room to the rear and a formal sitting room and TV room at the front and centre. The upper floors house five bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.

The design-savvy owners of a fashionable London shoe boutique, which we’d refurbished, appointed us to work on their home. They wanted to inject it with character and warmth, and although initially reluctant to make structural changes, reconsidered. The inspiration was modern and trendy Scandinavian style: what strikes you immediately are the views – the uninterrupted view from room to room through the depth of the building as well as those across to the stunning garden.

A dramatic entrance was created with charcoal and mustard geometric floor tiles against white walls and matt black skirting boards. Floor-to-ceiling Crittal doors open onto a formal sitting room to the side, with the dark, graphic lines of the frame echoed through a statement steel and glass quad pendant and simple black linear furniture and accessories

This sophisticated room at the front of the property leads through to a relaxed TV area and a beautiful kitchen-diner beyond. A stunning butterscotch polished plaster wall with an inset fireplace, symmetrical backlit shelves and dropped down low cabinetry designed by HUX London sets a striking tone.

Colourful, contemporary furniture, stylish lighting and interesting art, accessories and objet complement the eye-catching backdrop.

This look and feel continues in the TV lounge area, where a vibrant teal sofa creates an elegantly casual space. The featured abstract wallcovering from Feathr, displays the experimental, organic and textural nature of Slaughter’s art and is a striking way to energise the room, reflecting or contrasting with the space around it. The room is filled with iconic design pieces and modern furniture defined by simplicity, subtle sophistication and clean lines.

As you move into the kitchen and dining area a bank of floor-to-ceiling fine-framed glazed doors and three skylights flood the room with natural light. This worked hand in hand with the architectural elements which were very modern and pared back.

A polished concrete floor, white walls and an exposed brick feature wall combine to create a stylish setting for the sleek matt charcoal kitchen cabinets, which are topped with white marble worktops.

The exposed brick wall continues in the lounge area linking the two rooms. A chic mustard-coloured sofa and simple, black-framed furniture and lighting create a cosy and cohesive scheme. The result is a contemporary yet relaxed entertaining space.

A linear, black lacquered table surrounded by Carl Hansen CH88 chairs defines the dining space, with two huge Secto Octo walnut pendants suspended above; the warm tones of the timber balancing beautifully with the exposed brick opposite

A statement bar was also installed in the kitchen, decorated with plants to bring an earthy, arboreal element while maintaining the sharp, refined feel of the scheme.
